CRENSHAW COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

The student charged in the shooting death of a fellow Troy University student on New Years Day in 2014 pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter on Tuesday.

Taylor Driggers, of Brantley, was sentenced to a ten year split sentence with three of those years being served in prison. The other seven years will be served under suspended confinement.

Driggers was charged with manslaughter in the death of 18-year-old Kristen Fuller, of Luverne. Authorities say the shooting happened at a New Year's Eve party at a home just off U.S. Hwy. 29 between Luverne and Troy.

The shooting happened at 4:20 a.m. on New Years Day, according to a statement from the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

Neither Fuller nor Driggers lived at the location of the shooting, and alcohol was believed to be a factor in the incident, according to the district attorney.

Troy University officials confirmed that both Fuller and Driggers were enrolled students at the time of Fuller's death. Fuller was a freshman.

Driggers had signed to play on the university's football team, but officials say he hadn't joined the team at the time of the shooting.

"It was anticipated that he would join the team in the spring or summer of 2014," The university said in a statement.

Driggers was a football star at Brantley High School and part of the school's state championship team in 2012.
