HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

After a long wait, Huntsville will not get the Boeing 777X plant. Production will happen in Washington State.

Late last night, the machinists union in Washington voted to accept a new contract to build the Boeing 777X jet there. 51% of union members approved the new contract. Huntsville had been one of the locations in the running to get the project if the union and Boeing couldn't come to terms.

Boeing announced that following the approval of a contract extension offer by the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers District 751, "the 777X and its composite wing will be built in the Puget Sound area by Boeing employees represented by the IAM."

Governor Bentley said that "The State of Alabama values the 53 year history that we share with The Boeing Company which continues to create well-paying jobs in the state of Alabama. We look forward to continuing our close relationship with this outstanding company."

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle announced that the city "greatly appreciates having been invited to participate in the selection process for Boeing's production of the new 777X and for the opportunity to have conversations with company executives about the talent and ability in our city." Mayor Battle said that this has given the city an "opportunity to highlight what we do best - provide superior engineering, technology and manufacturing capabilities within a favorable economic environment."
