BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Former Homewood pastor Richard Shahan will appear for an extradition hearing Tuesday in a Tennessee court.

Shahan is charged with the murder of his wife, Karen, and was arrested in Nashville Wednesday, Jan. 1, at the airport.

The arrest warrant was issued Tuesday, Dec. 31 so his name was flagged during a security check.

Shahan's lawyers and Homewood Police say that Shahan was planning to leave the country for a mission trip. Homewood Police said in a press conference last week that they feared Shahan would flee to Russia after landing in Germany.

"Obviously once he got over to Germany and ultimately to Russia, the chances of extraditing him are pretty nil. If we can't get Snowden back, we probably wouldn't get him back either," Homewood Police Chief Jim Roberson said last week at a press conference.

However, Shahan's lawyers contend that their client wasn't trying to flee the country. They say it was well-known Shahan was traveling on a mission trip. They add that if they had known of the arrest warrant, they would have advised their client to cancel his trip.

Police aren't saying why they think Shahan would flee to Russia. FOX6 News has learned that Shahan did go to Russia in May 2012 for mission work. But according to recent flyers, this time he was planning to go to Central Asia.
