HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Officials with Huntsville City Schools are making sure students stay warm and safe during the extended cold period.

The school system's operations department distributed salt and other supplies to school campuses Monday morning. The maintenance staff arrived early to deal with patches of ice on sidewalks and parking lots. Crews also kept an eye on the heating systems.

"We have our lead HVAC technician who can also monitor the buildings from his laptop, even at home. He was watching the buildings over the weekend and we had people out spot-checking the buildings as well," said Dr. Jeffrey Wilson, Director of Operations.

Huntsville City Schools will delay the start of class until 10 a.m. Tuesday. However, to help parents, all school campuses will open at their regularly scheduled times, and cafeterias will serve breakfast.
