MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Utilities are working to restore power after several small outages across Madison County and one large outage early Tuesday morning.

The larger outage is affecting south Huntsville in the area of Challenger Elementary and Middle Schools. Areas south of Hobbs Road around Green Cove and Chaney Thompson Roads are affected. Crews are working to restore power quickly.

Challenger Elementary and Middle Schools and Farley Elementary School are currently without power.

Utilities said that the very cold temperatures are causing a high demand on the system, leading to these outages. Crews are ready to respond quickly and are working to restore each outage as quickly and safely as they can.

Huntsville Utilities reminds customers to wait about 15 minutes before starting your heating system again after your power is restored, thereby allowing crews to maintain stability across the system and reducing the possibility of more outages.

If you have an outage or service emergency, call 256-53LIGHT (4448).

Athens Utilities are also asking all customers to reduce power to non-essential consumption. This will help prevent additional outages.

At this time, Limestone County has scattered outages and about 4,000 customers out of power in the Clements area. Athens Utilities said these customers should have power sometime before 9:30 a.m. Authorities said the Clements substation went down due to an insulator malfunction due to so many currents running through.
