MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Public Safety is releasing figures on its Holiday Enforcement Campaign saying that State Troopers investigated 17 traffic fatalities.

The campaign during Christmas and New Year's Day started on Dec. 20, 2013, and ran through midnight Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.

The Dept. of Public Safety says 8 drivers, 8 passengers and one pedal cyclist were killed in traffic crashes that occurred during that time period.

The deaths occurred in Bullock, Chambers, Cherokee, DeKalb, Escambia, Franklin, Jackson, Macon, Marengo, Marshall and Talladega counties.

Investigators say seat belts were available for 16 of the 17 people killed, but only 4 of them were using the belts at the time of the crashes.

Each of the crashes remains under investigations, but Troopers' preliminary investigations show alcohol was a factor in five of the 17 deaths.

During the same 12-day period for 2012/2013, Troopers investigated 15 traffic deaths.
