WASHINGTON D.C. (WAFF) -

If you are using supplements to help lose weight, think twice. The Federal Trade Commission cracked down on several companies Tuesday, who each promise to help you lose weight with their diet products.

The companies settled to pay the FTC $34 million after their claims of weight loss were found to be deceptive and misleading to consumers.

The FTC announced its initiative Tuesday, called Operation Failed Resolution. It's part of an ongoing crackdown to help protect consumers from junk weight loss and body-slimming claims.

You may have heard of Sensa, the product where you sprinkle something on your food, and the fat will just fall off with no change in your personal diet or exercise. Sensa and three other companies have agreed to settle charges with the FTC that their claims were unfounded. The $34 million settlement represents the amount consumers who bought the product could get back in a refund.

Mary Engle, the FTC's Associate Director for Advertising Practices, said this case, like in others, is the result of a scrupulous review of the companies' claims. "It's important to put an end to deceptive claims and make sure going forward we don't see these kind of deceptive claims in the future," she said.

This is the second biggest advertising settlement in FTC history. The biggest lesson to be learned from it, perhaps, is to stick to shedding pounds the old-fashioned way.
