HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Teachers at Huntsville's University Place School noticed a bitterly cold problem – some students came to class Tuesday with no coats.

The school is proactive when they see kids in need. One staff member worked with relatives Tuesday to round up coats to send children home with protection against the frigid elements.

"We want these children warm because if they are not warm and they are cold, they cannot learn. So we have to help these children be in the shape to learn," said Dollie Jackson.

University Place has also worked with another school and a church throughout the year when they see similar needs among their students.

"The community has just been so generous. They've gone out of their way to get us coats for these children. Our children need to have warm coats and some of them cannot afford the coats," Jackson said.

Jackson said they have given out about 100 coats in the past year.
