Weather plays major role in devastating Dearborn County fire

DEARBORN COUNTY, IN (FOX19) -

Cold weather played a major role in a massive Dearborn County fire that destroyed a man's home.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 9800 block of Sinai Road around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

Larry Webster had to watch from a neighbor's house across that street as his possessions went up in flames.

Webster says frigid temperatures played a role in the fire. He says he was thawing out his water line when the insulation caught fire.

"I was grabbing the skirting and stuff around the mobile home trying to get the fire out of there but it got away from us," says Webster.

Multiple crews arrived on scene shortly after and stopped the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

"We did have two explosions, as to what they were, we have no idea at this time," says Matt Pyles of the Hogan Township Fire Department.

This is the second major fire in two days for many of these firefighters.

"Dearborn County has been a busy night when it gets cold," adds Pyles.

Fire Crews say that it is difficult doing their job in bitter cold temperatures. Firefighters are taking every precaution necessary to keep everyone safe.

"As you see we got three ambulances here," says Pyles. "The guys are getting drinks going and warming up for a bit, then coming back out just to stay warm and keep loose."

As for Webster, he says he collects cars. Some of his cars were in his garage when it went up in flames.

"They were totally destroyed, some of them," says Webster. "One of my favorites was, nothing left of it."

The State Fire Marshall will have to come check out the scene and make a final determination on what started to fire. No one was injured in the blaze.
