PIKE ROAD, AL (WSFA) -

After a lengthy process, the Town of Pike Road held a groundbreaking ceremony for the future home of the Pike Road Patriots. This is the first campus of its town's municipal school system.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held at The Waters community off Marler Road, began at 10 a.m. on Friday Jan. 10. Speakers including Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone, former Mayors Wayne Rabren and Judy Rittenor as well of members of the school board and former State Superintendent of Education Dr. Ed Richardson attended the ceremony.

"This is certainly one of the most momentous events that has taken place in the Town of Pike Road's brief history, and we are grateful and excited to approach this milestone," said Mayor Gordon Stone. "The groundbreaking and construction of this first campus of the Pike Road School System is the culmination of many years of vision and effort, and we hope to honor those whose work has brought us to this point and also encourage those who will carry the torch forward."

Weather permitting construction is scheduled to begin on the school site, which is adjacent to The Waters community, in the next few days.

The timeline as presented allows for occupation of the school in the summer of 2015, with classes beginning at the K-8 facility that fall. Right now, the students who would attend the Pike Road schools are currently in the Montgomery Public School System.
