Two charged with murder in Selma shooting

From the Selma, AL Police Department:

On January 12, 2014 at approximately 12:06 a.m., Selma Police Department Officers responded to a call from the Vaughan Hospital Emergency Room concerning a gunshot victim, a 62-year-old man from Selma. The victim died of complications from a single gunshot wound to his back.

Detectives and officers responded to Cheers Package Store on Broad Street in Selma, where the shooting occurred. There witnesses identified Rodney F. Walter Jr., age 22 of Selma and Maurice D. Pope, age 21 of Selma as the offenders in the shooting.

Further investigation discovered that the suspects had been in store and saw the victim exit the business going towards a vehicle. The suspects approached the victim, shot and robbed him of his money.

After having the suspects identified, Maurice Pope was detained from a residence in the 1500 block of Church Street and Rodney Walter was detained from a residence in the 1400 block of Albert Street.

The weapon used in the murder was .38 caliber handgun that had been stolen during an Unlawful Breaking & Entering of a Vehicle near Small Street Inn by the suspects before committing the Robbery-Murder.

Both suspects have been charged with Capital Murder and are currently being held at the Dallas County Jail with no bond. Other charges are pending.
