Holyoke named surrounding community to MGM casino proposal

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Holyoke has reached a deal with MGM as a surrounding community to their Springfield casino proposal.

Mayor Alex Morse says his city may not be directly next to Springfield but he is certain they will feel the effects of a Springfield casino if one is built.

Under their agreement, Holyoke will get $50,000 in up front funding from MGM if they're awarded the Western Mass casino license.

In addition, they'll get $1,275,000 over 15 years, translating to $85,000 a year.

The city isn't only getting money. The mayor says they also have a written deal with MGM that will secure hundreds of permanent jobs for Holyoke residents.

Holyoke joins Chicopee, Ludlow, Wilbraham, West Springfield, Agawam and East Longmeadow as the list of towns that have reached an agreement.

Hampden, Longmeadow and Northampton have all filed petitions to the state gaming commission to be designated surrounding communities in the hopes to get some funding from MGM.

Tonight on CBS 3 Springfield news at 11 p.m., tune in to hear from Mayor Morse on what he has to say on the deal.
