Store removes misleading sign about charity

ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Has an Athens store been misleading customers about collecting donations for the needy? A charity shared concerns they have about a store giving the impression they are.

One man specifically went to a thrift store thinking that a purchase he made there would go to help a charity. He was surprised to learn they aren't affiliated at all.

The shelves are stocked at the headquarters for Limestone County Churches Involved, more commonly known as LCCI.

LCCI Board President Tere Richardson said the non-profit is helped by 39 churches in the county that pull resources and donations together to first minister to the needy while also providing food and assistance. But LCCI popped up in another location: On a sign outside the TNT Super Thrift Plus store in Athens.

A concerned donor of LCCI snapped a photo of the sign, which was proof of a long standing issue LCCI has attempted to resolve with the store.

"We've been kindly asking (TNT) to take it down for over a year," Richardson said. "Our donors, our supporters are afraid that people are going into the shop and thinking that some kind of percentage of what they purchase is going back to LCCI. I've told people in no way are we affiliated with them. They have no authorization to do anything on behalf of Limestone County Churches Involved."

When TNT Manager Travis Stanley was asked about the sign, it had been removed.

"The bottom line is that nothing was sent to us about a sign," Stanley said. "It would have been ideal to take it down prior to today, but this is the first we've heard of it."

He offered assurances the store has never accepted donations on LCCI's behalf and only had one intention of promoting the organization.

"Initially, we put it up there for advertising for them. It's a billboard. We were trying to help them raise money . It's unfortunate," Stanley said.

With the sign removed, LCCI will no longer seek legal action. The organization is pleased that it can continue the work they do without questioning if donations are making it to the right hands.

For more information on LCCI, visit their Facebook Page or call (256) 262-0671. LCCI is based at 201 N. Jefferson Street, Athens, AL 35611. Information is also available at FoodPantries.org.
