BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A road has been reopened after a large wreck caused police to shut it down on Tuesday morning. It happened on the Highway 78 overpass near Finley Boulevard around 7:45 a.m.

Birmingham police say five people were hurt in the accident and went to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Sgt. Johnny Williams with Birmingham PD says the five people were in one car when it crossed the Highway 78 median and side swiped another car before hitting an 18-wheeler. Those five people went to the hospital. The people in the other car and 18-wheeler were not hurt.

A hazmat crew was on the scene because some oil and gas leaked out onto the road. It has since been cleaned up.
