Ohio surgeon found negligent in 1 of many lawsuits

CINCINNATI (AP) - A jury has found a Cincinnati spine doctor was negligent in performing surgery on a patient and awarded the woman more than $1 million.

The jury reached that verdict Tuesday against Abubakar Atiq Durrani (ah-boo-BAY'-ker AH'-teek duhr-AH'-nee) following a weeklong trial.

Ohio law will require that the award to patient Crystal Pierce be capped at $750,000.

The trial was held despite Duranni's absence. He fled to Pakistan against a judge's order, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

His attorney, Michael Lyon (LY'-en), says he's surprised by the verdict and is considering appealing.

The lawsuit is the first of dozens against Durrani by former patients in the Cincinnati region.

Durrani also faces 36 federal criminal charges including health care fraud, lying about health care matters and distributing controlled substances.
