HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

A memorial stands at the crash site where Meg Menzies was killed.

"Know that they are very loved by people who don't even know them and that we are all holding them in our hearts," said friend Brooke Roney.

Meg Menzies was hit and killed by Dr. Michael Carlson, according to authorities. Carlson said he tried to get the joggers attention before going off the road, court documents show.

Documents also say the officer noticed that Carlson's speech was slurred and that he smelled of alcohol. Carlson told the officer that the last time he drank was the night before.

Documents say his blood alcohol content level registered at 0.11. The legal limit in Virginia is .08. Carlson's lawyer said in court Tuesday that after the accident, Carlson got out of his car and attempted to help Menzies and called 911.

Menzies' husband is a sergeant with Ashland Police and a big advocate for the county's anti-drinking and driving campaign.

Donations can be made to the Ashland Police Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization established to help its members in times of need. Donations can be sent to the "Ashland Foundation" at 601 England Street, Ashland, VA 23005
