SPOTSYLVANIA, VA (WWBT) -
Shocking new details after deputies say they found two toddlers on the roof of a Spotsylvania town home and the parents are found dead asleep inside.
Michael Gillikin, 26, and Nancy Gillikin, 27, are facing four counts of felony child neglect after neighbors called 911 in a panic.
Both parents are out on bond, and the mother tells a very different story, saying that her kids were never outside and this is all a misunderstanding.
Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. 2 deputies arrived to Wakeman Drive.
"They actually observed two small toddlers on the roof, outside of an open window in one of the town homes there were lots of neighbors and passersby trying to coax the children back into the window and even some others were pounding on the door trying to get someone to come to the door and answer," said Captain Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office.
Through an unlocked door, Pearce says deputies rushed to the second floor window.
"One deputy actually crawled out partially out of the window until he can reach the children and brought each one of them in," said Pearce.
And while all this was going on, the Gillikins admit they were in another room, sleeping.
"I woke up to the police walking into the bedroom, telling me my kids were on the roof, and I'm freaking out because my kids have never ever tried to go on the roof," said Nancy Gillikin.
Nancy believes her kids were never on the roof and that there's no proof of it.
"The screen was down, you have to push two little buttons to push the screen up, what kind of 2, 3 year old would know how to do that," she said.
The accusations of neglect are unsettling for this mother of 4 who's now been separated from her children.
"It kills me, I love my kids to death and all I do is protect them, that is my job as a mom, I do that and I know my kids, a mom knows their kids and I know my kids did not go on that roof," said Nancy.
Child Services claims the home was in disarray and not suitable for children.
"I miss them all, I miss them all, I just want my kids," said Nancy.
The investigation continues, but we were informed the Gillikins have been charged with felony child neglect before four years ago.
