BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Alabama State Fire Marshal says since Jan. 5 18 people have died in house fires across the state this year.

Ed Paulk calls the number "unacceptable" and says these deaths are tragic. He adds that most of them could have been prevented.

Paulk says one of the fatalities was ruled a homicide but the other fires were caused by people trying to stay warm.

He is urging citizens to pay attention to how they are heating their homes.

"We need to understand that we need to keep combustibles at least three feet away from these heaters.....we do not need to go to bed with these heaters running. Let's put appropriate blankets on beds to sleep under," he said.

Paulk says some of the fires have started from burning candles, fireplaces and even people using a stove to heat the house.
