AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

With safety in mind, the City of Auburn has updated its door-to-door solicitation ordinance after residents complained of aggressive solicitors that resulted with calls to 911.

Latrice Mose, City of Auburn Revenue Manager, explains, "They would come to their homes when it was dark outside, and then they wouldn't take no for an answer. Sometimes they were going in neighborhoods that had no solicitation signs that has always been a part of the ordinance. So they were violating parts of the ordinance and frankly, making people uncomfortable."

At Tuesday's City Council meeting, members approved changes to the ordinance which include a background check for all solicitors, a 90-day limitation on solicitation certificates and changes to the original 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. time limitation.

"Now from September until the following May, solicitation has to end at 6 p.m. In the other months, it's until 8 p.m.," says Mose.

Even though a lot of changes have been made to this updated ordinance, city officials say that this new policy does not apply to charity solicitors, like the Girl and Boys Scouts.

"If you are soliciting for donations, those types of things, then that's still allowed," explains Mose, "If you are campaigning and you want to drop off some literature about your candidate, that's allowed."
