NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A key member of the Saints Super Bowl defense is being investigated for three instances of sexual assault, one in New Orleans.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's, current NFL analyst and former NFL safety Darren Sharper was arrested last night on two charges of sexual assault. He is currently out on $200,000 bond. According to the LAPD, victims said the alleged sexual assaults took place in October 2013 and earlier this month in the West Los Angeles area.
According to NOPD spokesman Remi Braden, local police are also investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Sharper.
NOPD put out a statement today saying that an allegation of sexual assault was filed against Sharper on Sept. 24, 2013. The statement also said that "as with every case alleging sexual assault, information gathered is extremely sensitive and the top priority of the detectives is to protect the person who filed the complaint."
FOX 8 Legal Analyst Joseph Raspanti said multiple allegations of the same crime can be damaging to Sharper's case.
"If there's a similar pattern alleged like the same way that he acts and the way that he did under what they call a 404 b, they can get the evidence of one act or more into evidence in another trial," Raspanti said.
Sharper spent 14 years as a safety in the NFL. He started his career as a Green Bay Packer, moved and moved to the Minnesota Vikings before he spent his final two years in the NFL with the Saints. Sharper was a five-time pro-bowl selection and six-time All Pro. He tallied 651 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 8 forced fumbles and 63 interceptions over his career.
Sharper is currently an analyst with the NFL Network where he "has been suspended without pay until further notice, effective immediately," an NFL Network spokesman said in a statement.
Sharper's first court date is set for Feb. 14.
