Elderly man killed, two police officers injured in car wreck

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A 90-year-old man was killed Sunday morning after the vehicle he was a passenger in collided with a Birmingham Police patrol car.

Birmingham Police say  around 11:00 a.m.,  officers were stopped in the center lane of I-65 just north of the 3rd avenue exit attempting to remove a ladder on the interstate.  One officer was out of the patrol car removing the ladder when the driver of another vehicle rear-ended the patrol car with the other officer still inside.

Both officers were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were also transported to a local hospital where the 90-year-old man was pronounced dead.  The driver's condition is unknown.  The cause of the accident is under investigation.
