(WMC-TV) - Supporters of an elementary school on the proposed closure list used an Martin Luther King Jr. Day event to try and get the mayor's attention.

The MLK Day commemoration sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was held at Cane Creek Baptist, and their demonstration outside is something Westhaven elementary supporters believe Dr. King would appreciate.

Hundreds packed Cane Creek Baptist Church.

"This is the time to do it," said Westhaven PTA member Bridget Bradley describing the protest. "They're taking children who are progressing in schools and putting them in failing schools"

Westhaven is one of 13 schools on a proposed closure list and defended during a community meeting last week.

Parents and students specifically targeted the MLK event to try and get Mayor A C Wharton's attention.

"Wharton hasn't spoken a word about historical black schools closing, he hasn't said a word about it," said Bradley.

Mayor Wharton did say he would work to find uses for schools that are closed, including making them possible community centers.

"I don't want to step in and say I can control the school system. I cannot do that," he said. "We can't afford to have just vacant boarded up buildings"

But many parents will not rest until they say the job is done.

The SCLC used Monday's event to officially endorse a school voucher bill in Tennessee, which specifically targets children from low-income families in failing schools.
