LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
The Lauderdale County Volunteer Fire
Department said it's time for a change after seeing a declining number of
recruits. They are thinking outside the box when it comes to retention and are
inviting other volunteer departments to join them.
"Our volunteers are becoming fewer and fewer
every year. We're not gaining as many applications, we're not getting as much
help, and the workload on everyone at the fire department is just growing,"
said Association President Adam McCanless.
two-day workshop has been planned by the Lauderdale County Volunteer
Firefighters' Association, free of cost to all local departments in the area.
Registrations have been made by departments as far away as Tennessee and Mississippi,
and there is still room for more.
McCanless wants to challenge the departments
to help build membership. The training provided in the workshop will cover
topics from fundraising ideas to marketing, as well as ways to help get the
community involved with their local departments and encourage them to give

out and get people, to be inspired to try new things. It's all about change
today; you have to change with the times, otherwise you're going to fall
behind," he said.
