MONTEVALLO, AL (WBRC) -

A 20-year-old woman is in the hospital fighting for her life after being shot at an apartment in Montevallo Monday night.

The victim, identified by her fiance as Lauren George, lives at the Falcon Manor apartments on Overton Road. Montevallo police chief Jeremy Littleton said officers responded to a report of shots being fired at Falcon Manor around 10:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20.

George's fiance Jonathan Jones said a group of people came to the apartment to try to rob them. Jones said one of the robbers fired a handgun several times.

"It's sad to say. I didn't think the kid meant to hit anybody. I think he was trying to be a thug or whatever but he has ruined his life," Jones said.

Jones said his fiance was shot in the parking lot as he scuffled with one of the robbers. The bullet hit her in the head.

"Doctors are waiting for her hemorrhaging in her brain to go down. The have to pick out skull fractures and case fractures out of her brain," Jones said.

George is being treated at UAB Hospital.

Neither Jones nor George are students at the University of Montevallo, which is less than a mile from Falcon Manor apartments. Chief Littleton says the public is not at risk and the shooting is not affiliated with the university.

"Montevallo is a quiet community. This is an isolated incident. So the community is safe. There is not a public safety issue at this time and we are actively investigating the case," Littleton said.

Jones is asking for prayers for his fiance.

"Please keep her in your prayers. If I could ask anything, please keep her in your prayers. She is a wonderful person. She doesn't deserve this," he said.

Chief Littleton is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Montevallo Police at 205-665-1264.
