Eight straight for LSUS Pilots; knock off 10th-ranked Wiley

The LSU Shreveport Pilots picked up their eight consecutive victory with a 94-82 over 10th-ranked Wiley College Wildcats at Alumni Gymnasium on Tuesday night in Red River Athletic Conference play in front of a packed house.

LSUS head coach Kyle Blankenship was pumped with his team's performance, "What a great environment for a college basketball game tonight. I thought our guys handled themselves well and handle themselves throughout the contest tonight. Us holding ourselves together is what propelled us to victory."

LSUS hit the three's early and often with 10 makes from beyond the arc in the first half alone. The Pilots made just two of eight attempts from beyond the arc but it was enough to get past one of top 10 teams in the country.

Joseph James led the way with four makes from downtown for the Pilots while Mark Politte, Brandon Davis and Will Nelson also joined the three-draining party each with a pair of long range buckets.

"In the first half JJ hit some huge three's to get them out of their 2-3 zone early in the game but the switch to a 2-2-1 half court trap that caused us some problems to end the first half, however we made the proper adjustments at half time and came out in the second half and extended our lead early and never let go," Blankenship continued.

The Pilots didn't shoot bad either from the field, making 50-percent for the game including 54-percent in the second half, a half that they had struggled with earlier in the year.

Davis led the way for the visitors with another double-double performance with 26 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Nelson added his usual 20+ with 24 points and grabbed six rebounds. Tevin Hall and James were the other two Pilots to reach double figures on the score sheet. Hall pitched in 17 and James added 14.

"We fill like we have two of the best player s in the country in WN and BD and with the supporting cast around them we feel like we have a great chance to win when they combine for 50 points," added Blankenship.

The free throw line could have doomed the Pilots tonight as Wiley got the majority of the attempts but thankfully the three-pointers were on point for the Pilots. The Wildcats went 33 of 42 from the charity stripe while the Pilots were 18 of 23 in which the majority of their portion came late in the game when Wiley fouled for an attempt to get back in the game with LSUS misses from the line that did not come.

Up next the Pilots will have a pair of home games at the friendly confines at The Dock hosting Huston-Tillotson at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night and then will welcome Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
