TALLASSEE, AL (WSFA) -

Officials say a man was flown to UAB Hospital Wednesday after an early morning fire in Tallassee.

The State Fire Marshal's office say the victim, whose name has not yet been released, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital after receiving burns in the house fire.

He has since been taken by medical helicopter to the University of Alabama at Birmingham's burn unit.

Family members tell WSFA 12 News the man, who is blind, had skin and lung burns and that his clothes were melted to his body when he was rescued. He's currently being treated in a medically-induced coma.

Witnesses say the fire, which happened on Washington Street, left the home as a total loss.

No other information is known at this time, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The State Fire Marshal's office says there have been 19 fire-related deaths so far in 2014.
