FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

With another cold snap upon us, more churches are opening their doors, serving as warming shelters for those in need.

Community members pushed for more shelters to open after the fierce drop in temperatures earlier this month. A group of concerned citizens gathered to discuss ways to partner with local churches to help those in need.

Starting Wednesday night and for the next few days, several churches in the Shoals are opening their doors as warming shelters to help those in need.

Taking advantage of the shelters doesn't necessarily mean you are homeless. Perhaps your heat isn't strong enough for the below-freezing temperatures, or maybe a pipe burst in your home or the power goes out. Regardless of the reason for the need, local churches want community members to know they're open for them.

First Presbyterian in Florence is one of the churches offering assistance. Dr. Richard Gillespie said the push from community members speaks volumes about the people in the Shoals.

"It's truly amazing and it makes the Shoals a wonderful place to want to be and to live and to be involved because of the caring and compassion you find here. It's a genuine response to a very real need," he said.

Other warming shelters in the area include the Christian Life Center at Highland Baptist Church, 219 Simpson Street in Florence, which opens Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Beasley Center of the First United Methodist Church Athens will also host a warming center at the corner of Bryan and Marion Streets, from 8 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
