Human memory is an interesting thing. Time can water it down, remove the impact and significance of past events. As I watched the 13th anniversary commemoration ceremonies for 9/11, I was reminded of that.More >>

Again this year, teachers are rallying at the State Capitol asking for across the board pay raises. It's a tough decision for lawmakers as they weigh how to spend taxpayer dollars.

The governor is in favor of merit pay hikes. We agree that getting pay increases based on performance is the right thing to do.

But the problem in Mississippi is the base pay for starting teachers is just too low. Teachers in Mississippi are among lowest paid in America.

We can't solve the pay issue in one year, but the state legislature must act now to improve pay over time. If we want to attract and keep good teachers for our children in Mississippi, the pay must be improved.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
