BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) had to close several lanes at the I-59/65/20 interchange in Birmingham after an unknown vehicle clipped an overpass.

All lanes were re-opened around 5:30 p.m. after crews completed their inspection of the bridge.

An ALDOT spokesperson says that an unknown vehicle hit the I-59 southbound bridge ramp at I-65 southbound interchange. ALDOT says the likely culprit is an 18 wheeler with an oversized load.

The bridge overpass has been approved for travel by ALDOT officials and they say the damage is mostly cosmetic. But Brian Davis with ALDOT says it didn't look very good when crews arrived.

"Debris was falling when our guys arrived there. Chunks of concrete that was lose. The top bridge with traffic on it still vibrating. So as that happens it had the potential for some large chunks to fall on somebody and that's what we couldn't gamble on," he said.

So troopers closed the two right lanes of I-65 northbound & one lane from I-59 southbound to I-65 southbound which caused the major backups.

Reporter John Huddleston spoke with an ALDOT official about the incident and will have more information in his reports during FOX6 News at 9 and 10.
