MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A report released by the White House this week cast a bright light on a dark topic, sexual assault and rape on college campuses. According to the report, 1 in 5 female college students are assaulted and only 1 in 8 of the assaulted victims ever reports the crime. You might be shocked to learn that institutions of higher learning (colleges) have the highest prevalence for rape and sexual assaults against women. These sickening occurrences most often follow drinking or drug use at student parties.

The findings of this report hit particularly close to home following this stations investigation into the alleged gang rape of a female student on the campus of Alabama State University. A terrible situation that was not made known to the student body until pressure was applied by WSFA 12 News. Coincidentally, this report cited a problem among colleges and universities not only in investigating these types of sexual assaults, but accurately reporting the on-campus crime or appropriately punishing the assailants.

We commend the White House for releasing these findings and hopefully waking us up to the reality that bad things are happening to many of our young ladies away at college. So we need to talk about this reality with our children before and during their time at school and hold the colleges to a higher standard of reporting, investigating and punishing those that commit these high crimes. "No" means NO!
