Skyplex business hopefuls shot down by license commission

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The former Skyplex Bar has set empty and lifeless for the past two years.

Wilfredo Lopez, of Springfield, and Robin Herrera, of Manchester, CT, was looking to reopen its doors to patrons in Stearns Square.

"It would've been a great business for Springfield," said Lopez

But after presenting their plan to the license commission, they were shot down.

"It was not a polished presentation like we're used to seeing. It was very disjointed," said Peter Sygnator, chairman of the commission.

The commission said the proposal was missing information in regards to parking and security.

The building can hold roughly 1,000 people.

Sygnator said that's a number far too large for a nightclub atmosphere.

"The residents of downtown did not want that many people on the streets at 2 a.m.," said Sygnator.

Residents, like Carole Costa, agree.

"Right from the start we were disappointed," said Costa.

She is a member of the Armory Quadrangle Civic Association.

She said she's not against a nightclub in the building but said Thursday's night proposal lacked any type of structure.

"Certainly we cannot approve a nightclub that has such poor planning," said Costa.

The building sits in the heart of the Entertainment District, an area that is no stranger to problems during height of the late night rush hour.

Since Skyplex first closed its doors, Sygnator said those problems have diminished.

"Now that the Skyplex is closed, the downtown area has seen a sign of relief," said Sygnator.

But Lopez said they had a plan in place to keep things under control.

"We met with every city official with our plan. Once we met with them, we came up with a plan. They had no issue with what he had," said Lopez.

He plans on appealing the commission's decision and will request another license for the site.
