LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
A four-vehicle crash involving a Limestone County school bus shut down part of Highway 72 for more than an hour Friday morning.
Authorities said two adults and two students suffered minor injuries and that the crash happened while students boarded at a bus stop.
Limestone County Schools said 16 East Limestone High School students were on the bus. The driver pulled over, put her stop sign out, and picked up a few students moments before another driver hit the bus.
The district said two cars behind the bus collided and a third car ran into them. One of the vehicles hit the side of the bus. The East Limestone principal said emergency crews took two adults, including a pregnant woman, to the hospital.
"We had our lights on and our stop sign out, but so many drivers get into a habit of driving a certain speed, then when you have something that's out of the normal, they're not aware of it and they don't think of a four-lane road being a pick-up area," said Principal Dennis Black.
The multi-vehicle wreck closed part of eastbound Highway 72 and delayed westbound traffic.
The parents of two students elected to take them to the hospital. Crews said minor injuries were reported. The 14 remaining students boarded a different bus minutes after the crash and made their way safely to campus.
State troopers continue to investigate the crash.
