MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Montgomery Police are warning the public to avoid leaving your running car unattended.

The increase in car thefts has coincided with the recent cold weather. Motorists may attempt to leave their cars running to warm them up before driving.

Police say thieves are on the lookout for vehicles left running and unattended, especially during cold weather and in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. Vehicles left running and unattended can be stolen in a matter of seconds.

Do not leave you car unattended while warming up. Officers encourage residents to be aware of their surroundings and advise owners to check their car manual for safety protocols and available anti-theft devices.
