Cold weather impacting area businesses

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The winter months are usually fairly slow for the staff at United Heat, A/C and Plumbing in Montgomery but this month is anything but slow.

"It's not normal to have Ohio-type weather down here in Alabama," said Shane Morrison with United. "We're usually this busy in the middle of summertime fixing air conditioners but right now we're running around repairing furnaces and water leaks from busted water pipes."

This month is shaping up to be a record breaker- their busiest in 10 years.

"This area of the country is not used to cold weather for so many consecutive hours so there are a lot of pipes bursting in attics which destroy the ceiling and sheet rock so there's a lot of damage going on inside the house as well as furnaces that are on their last leg, barely working. And when it gets this cold, they're working extremely hard and they end up breaking down or failing on you so we're having a lot of service calls," Morrison added.

Business is also brisk over at the Goo Goo express car wash, especially since folks can stay in their warm cars but when the temperatures dip, it can affect the flow. The car wash had to shut down for a day when our area was recently hit by the polar vortex.

"Once it gets down below freezing, around 28, 26 degrees, we normally have to stop running cars or start warning all of our customers that there could be damage. The wraps that spin could form ice and could cause scratches and stuff like that. And of course, there's always the chance that the water on the ground could freeze and that's a consideration that we have to take into account," said Assistant Manager Jonathan Richard.

And this weather isn't exactly a treat for those who specialize in cold treats. The parking lot at Bruster's ice cream deserted Friday night and the staff at Nancy's Italian Ice is looking ahead to warmer days.

"The drive thru stays busy because people get it and take it home where it's warm. As long as the sun is shining, people will come but once that sun goes down and the cold air moves in, we're just waiting for people to come but we enjoy it," said co-owner Dorie Autrey.
