LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - On a day more than 90 non-profits and schools canceled events across the metro, Bellarmine University went on with a fundraiser benefiting families a world away from ice and snow.

Thrifty shoppers scored deals on big screens and espresso machines in a gymnasium.

Jay Desnoyers spent $75 on a 65-inch television. "Our money is going to a good place, so why not," Desnoyers said about his purchase.

"It's a life-changing experience and really opens your eyes. You get to witness poverty and the people there are so nice and generous," Craig Satterley said.

"We've definitely seen a decrease in the amount of people, but the community is still coming out. All of our regular vendors came to see us. And the people who've always come to see us made it here," Amanda Beck said. "Snow or no snow, they'll at least try and come out and support us."

Organizers hope that support totals $7,000 when they closed the doors to the sale Saturday afternoon.
