ATLANTA, GA. (WSFA) -

The Alabama State University's Mighty Marching Hornets Band came away victorious in the Talent Contest of the 2014 Honda Battle of the Bands in Atlanta.

Each of the eight HBCU schools selected to be showcased at the Honda Battle of the Bands were allowed to enter its best 'talent' from among its entire band. Band director James Oliver entered the ASU Trombone Section into the Talent Contest. The Trombone Section took home the top honor.

"We are proud to say that ASU not only participated in Honda's 'Talent Contest,' on Friday, but our Trombone Section won it; taking home Honda's first-place and first-ever Talent Contest trophy," Oliver said. "ASU was judged by the best folks present to judge college musicians, which were the head drum majors of all eight of the HBCU's present."

The Mighty Marching Hornets Band was one of eight bands from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) participating the competition. ASU made it to the finals after an online voting process.

This has been an eventful 12 months for the students who are members of the ASU band family with the ASU Honey Beez being featured on the Steve Harvey TV Show last March, and the ASU Stingettes being featured on the MTV Music Awards in April, as well as on a hip-hop music video.

This was the second trip for ASU to the Honda Battle of the Bands after having appeared in 2006.
