SOMERVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Neighbors are talking about the man accused of leading police on a high speed chase over the weekend.  James Huber, 40, is in the Madison County jail facing felony charges including attempted murder. The chase crossed several counties and ended with a six hour standoff.

Trudy Elledge has lived down the road from James Huber for more than three years.  She said she hadn't seen her neighbor at his Hill Road home in Somerville in a while, but when she watched the news on Saturday, she was shocked.

"It's unbelievable with him," she said. "I just couldn't see that out of him. I saw it on TV and I said that's James."

Huber is facing two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of attempting to elude police and two counts of attempted murder. This after authorities say he sped away from a traffic stop leading them from Madison to Morgan County and firing several shots at deputies along the way.

"I couldn't believe he would shoot at the police," said Elledge. "That just wasn't him. He was always so calm and nice."

It was all over after a six hour standoff, when Huber surrendered and was taken into custody on the Highway 31 bridge in Decatur. Deputies said that Huber told them he was distraught over the death of his wife, Melissa. She was murdered in their home earlier this month.

"They were very good people and I'm sorry about her," said Elledge. "I hate what's happened to him. I wish it never happened to him and with the girl, too."

Huber's daughter Kristina has been identified as a person of interest in her mother's death.  She was arrested the day her mother died on an unrelated charge and remains in custody.

James Huber is being held on $144,000 bond.
