Increased phone use by Alabamians concerning the winter storm, school closings and traffic-related issues caused a different type of traffic issue--phone traffic.

Verizon Wireless customers around Alabama have been experiencing delayed connection times, incomplete voice messages and unreliability during phone calls today.

Verizon says texting is a more reliable way for Alabamians to communicate in this winter storm and to avoid making phone calls.

Call traffic in Alabama at least doubled today, Verizon spokesman Michael Swearingen said in a statement released to FOX6 News regarding unhappy Verizon customers.

"We are encouraging customers to communicate via text message. Typical call traffic for this time of day is around 700,000 per hour, but have seen that number increase to 2,000,000," Swearingen said.

Swearingen said since both phone traffic and traffic on the roads have been big issues today, Alabamians should only communicate by phone call in case of a emergency.

"We encourage customers to text first during times of emergency and to leave lines open for first responders," Swearingen said.

Swearingen also explained that data and text connectivity has not been affected.

The company says that this issue is being addressed.

"Verizon's network team is working to resolve these capacity issues," Swearingen said.
