CASA GRANDE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 1-year-old boy is dead, and Casa Grande police were trying to determine just how he was killed Tuesday night.

The boy's mother called 911 about 8:50 p.m. and said her son was hit by a car and unresponsive.

A police spokesman said the investigation revealed the father might have hit the child with his truck when he left home. He returned a short time later.

Investigators were trying to determine how the child got outside and whether he was supervised at the time, the spokesman said. They said he suffered significant trauma.

The boy was taken to Casa Grande Regional medical Center, where he died, the spokesman said.

No charges had been filed, but the investigation was continuing, the spokesman said.

No other information was immediately available.
