Mesa police release man in deadly shooting

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A 22-year-old Mesa man was shot and killed by a man who returned home to find the victim waiting for him Tuesday afternoon.

Jonathan Martinez, 22, and the shooter were involved in an earlier dispute that led to the confrontation at an apartment in the area of Dobson Road and Main Street in Mesa, a police spokesman said.

Martinez was waiting when the man arrived about 2 p.m. He confronted Martinez and ultimately shot him, the spokesman said.

The shooter was cooperative and after interviews with several other witnesses, the man was released pending further investigation, the spokesman said.

Officers searched the apartment and found a small-caliber rifle believed used in the shooting. They said they also found a folding knife in Martinez's possession, the spokesman said.
