Man surrenders in fatal Phoenix hit-and-run

A man is in custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident in Phoenix.

Darren Darnelle Hanson, 21, called police about 35 minutes after Tuesday night's accident and turned himself in, officers said.

Hanson is being held on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal collision.

Investigators said Matthew James Helmick, 35, was crossing in the area of 2300 West Maryland Avenue about 7 p.m. when he was struck by a car, which left the scene.

Police said Helmick was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The case remains under investigation.
