TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Tempe police said a car fire at a QT gas station and store Wednesday night appeared to be tied to drug crimes.

The fire was reported about 9:45 p.m. in the station's parking lot at 3875 S. Priest Dr., just south of U.S. Highway 60, said Molly Enright of the Tempe Police Department.

QT employees helped put out the fire, but the driver fled in the vehicle before firefighters and police officers arrived, Enright said.

The car was later found at a nearby apartment complex.

Some residents were evacuated as a precaution while explosive experts made sure no explosives were inside the vehicle, Enright said.

The suspect was still at-large, and Enright said no injuries were reported.

Some witnesses said there was methamphetamine in the car, but police said an examination of the vehicle showed no meth or a meth lab involved in the fire.

Enright said the investigation was continuing.

No other information was immediately available.
