PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

The Humane Society of the U.S. is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those behind the shooting of two wild burros northwest of Phoenix.

The Bureau of Land Management says a resident reported Sunday the discovery of two mature burros west of Castle Hot Springs Road.

Authorities believe the shooting occurred around 2 p.m. Sunday.

The shooting was within the BLM's Lake Pleasant Herd Management Area in Maricopa County.

Rem Hawes, the BLM's Hassayampa Field Manager, says officers are asking for anyone who saw or heard anything Sunday afternoon to come forward.

Wild burros and horses are protected under the Wild Free - Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.

Fewer than 7,000 wild burros remain on BLM lands in the West. More than half of them are located in Arizona.

Suspects in the shooting could face up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Anyone with information on the Lake Pleasant burro killings is asked to contact the BLM at 800-637-9152. All calls are confidential.
