Heritage hosting annual Festival of Negro Spirituals

Heritage will hosts its 23rd Annual Festival of Negro Spirituals on Saturday, February 1 at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 185 Eddie Robinson, Sr. Drive, in Baton Rouge at 3 p.m.

The event, which Heritage has hosted since 1991, will feature performances of spirituals by Heritge and several other outstanding community and university ensembles.

Other choral ensembles scheduled to perform at the 2014 HERITAGE Festival of Negro Spirituals include:

 

            Southern University Concert Choir - Baton Rouge

            McMain High School - New Orleans

            O. Perry Walker High School – New Orleans

            McKinley High School Concert Choir - Baton Rouge
            McKinley High School Gospel Choir - Baton Rouge

            Baker High School Concert Choir - Baker

            The Heritage Chorale – Monroe

            New Orleans Black Chorale

            New Dimensions Choral Society - Shreveport

            New Dimensions Youth Chorale – Shreveport

 

Special guest choir is The Bennie L. Williams Spiritual Voices, Denver Colorado, Ms. Bennie L. Williams, director.

The event is free and open to the publc.

Heritage is a non-profit professional choral ensemble, founded and directed by Clarence Jones.  Its mission is to perpetuate the "Negro Spiritual" as a distinctive art form, as an expression of the Negro ancestors' struggles and aspirations; to preserve the legacy of the Negro Spiritual in its original medium and foster its influence for all people of the community.
