MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery Police Department says one of its officers struck and injured a fleeing suspect early Thursday morning.

According to city officials, the officer attempted a traffic stop in regards to the suspect around 1:40 a.m. after observing a traffic violation in the 2700 block of Chestnut Street.

The unnamed suspect, driving a Chevrolet Impala, fled the scene and the officer initiated a pursuit.

The suspect is said to have bailed out of the vehicle near Highland Avenue. It was at that point when the officer struck the adult male, causing injury to his leg. The suspect was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

MPD is asking the Alabama Department of Public Safety to investigate the incident.

The officer is currently on administrative leave.
