PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Surveillance video shows burglars broke into EZ Money Pawn Shop on Glendale Avenue early Monday morning and the store's parent company says the crime may have tripped an alarm but the police were never called.
The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms is looking for a pair believed to be behind the pawn shop heist. An ATF spokesperson, Tom Mangan said the crooks got away with 36 handguns.
"These individuals went back and forth four times in a four hour period," Mangan said. "We could've apprehended them and the [police] would have apprehended them."
Investigators and the pawn shop are working with the security company to find out why police were never called during the break-in.
According to authorities, the guns were stored in a back room.
There are several state and federal laws which regulate the sale of firearms but few which regulate the storage of such merchandise.
At Windy City Pawn on Indian School Road, the store implements its own policy for safety reasons.
"We keep them on racks such as these and we have fireproof safes in which we lock them into," Windy City Manager Johnny Krane said.
The guns for sale at Windy City Pawn are all locked in a safe every night, according to store policy.
The firearms stolen from EZ Money Pawn Shop were not in a safe but authorities say that doesn't violate any regulatory laws and the pawn shop has been cooperative with their investigation by reporting the crime and giving detectives clear video evidence of the suspected burglars.
"There are some shots of these individual's faces that we're confident the public will be able to assist us and put the handcuffs on these people and arrest them," Mangan said.
Silent Witness is offering a $6,000 reward. If you recognize either of the suspects, contact Silent Witness.
