PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Valley man who dedicates his time to making sure students get to and from school safely got a surprise that couldn't have been more timely.

For the past five years, Pablo Gamboa has been protecting children headed to and from Solano Elementary School in Phoenix.

He's made a lasting and loving impression on kids and parents alike. People say he is always cheerful and has a smile for everybody.

Lisa Harris was aware of Pablo's personality already but it was actually her 9-year-old daughter, Bailey, who thought of nominating him for Pay It Forward.

"I said, 'I have the perfect person,'" Bailey told CBS 5.

"He says, 'good morning' to us. 'Good afternoon.' Pablo, he takes off extra time from home or trying to do something else to make sure students get to school and home safely," Bailey said.

"I think I should Pay It Forward to you, Pablo," Bailey said.

Even with an interpreter, Gamboa might not have known exactly what he was getting until Bailey told him to open the envelope with $500 inside.

The gift couldn't have come at a better time. Gamboa, who weaves his way in and out of traffic every day, doesn't have a working truck to get him home safely. It broke down months ago.

Gamboa was overwhelmed by the gift.

"I felt something in my chest swell," he said. "I felt, I'm a man but I felt like I was going to cry."
