METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - Closing night of Family Gras will look a little different this year after the Krewe of Atlas announced that it won't roll in Metairie as planned on Feb. 23.

The krewe says it can't afford it.

Atlas was scheduled to replace Thor, another krewe that bowed out this year for financial reasons.

We're disappointed, but confident that next year it will either be Atlas or somebody will be back on Sunday," said Violet Peters, with the Jefferson Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"When there's only so much disposable income, people have to decide if they're going to pay for kids' school or extracurricular activities, or if they'll continue with Mardi Gras," said Parish President John Young. "So I think we're going through that cycle right now, and we're going to come back out."

The Krewe of Atlas hopes to be a part of Carnival in Metairie next year, and Young says it's welcome to roll.
