West leads NSU past Incarnate Word, 100-86

Sophomore point guard Jalan West posted his second career double-double, matching his career best with 10 assists while pouring in 27 points, and senior guard Brison White had a career-best 24 points Thursday night as Northwestern State won its third straight, cruising past Incarnate Word 100-86.

The Demons (8-11 overall, 4-4 in the Southland) led by 30, 68-38 with 14:22 to go, before the Cardinals (16-4, 4-3) mounted a valiant comeback, getting within 12 in the final half-minute. They sank 15 of 32 shots from behind the 3-point arc, including 14 of 21 aim in the second half.

NSU freshman Zeek Woodley, third in the nation with his 61.7 shooting percentage, made 7 of 11 shots in a 14-point outing while senior DeQuan Hicks added 10 points and 7 rebounds for the Demons, who continue a four-game homestand Saturday afternoon at 3 against Abilene Christian.

UIW got 23 points by Kyle Hittle and 20 from Denzel Livingston to lead five double-digit scorers. The Cardinals made just 11 of 35 shots from inside the 3-point arc, including eight that were blocked by the Demons, four by Marvin Frazier, who leads the Southland with a 2.2 average.

West continued his hot shooting as he drained 7 of 11, including 4 of 7 on 3-pointers, making him 12 of 19 in the three-game winning streak on treys. The Southland's free throw percentage leader raised his 85.3 rate by making all nine tries from the line, eight in the last three minutes to foil UIW's rally.

Ranked 20th nationally and first in the league with a 5.9 assists average, West had seven after halftime, five in the final 7:02 as he equaled the 10 assists he had last year in the regular-season finale against Sam Houston State. The country's No. 10 ranked steals man, he topped his 2.58 average with three swipes.

The Demons outrebounded the taller Cardinals 45-38 with Frazier snagging a game-best nine boards. NSU sank 19 of 22 free throws, raising its aim to 86 percent (72-84) in the winning streak. White made 6 of 7 and was 8 of 19 from the floor, including 2-5 on 3s, while posting his career high.

NSU took control with a 17-1 run over four minutes midway through the first half and was up 47-30 at the break.  The Demons went on a 21-8 tear in the first six minutes after halftime to go up by 30.

NSU shot 51 percent overall and sank 11 of 18 on 3-pointers, picking off nine steals. Eleven players scored as the Demons posted their fifth 100-point total of the season, the best in McConathy's 15 seasons. It was also the 15th time in his career his Demons have cracked the century mark, the ninth time in the past two seasons.

The homestand continues Saturday afternoon as Abilene Christian visits Prather Coliseum. Next week, McNeese comes to town on Thursday night. Feb. 6, on "Gumbo Cook Off" night and Nicholls is the foe wrapping up the homestand on Feb. 8.
