Woman endures 18 hours in cold after hand gets stuck in truck

MOLALLA, OR (KPTV) -

A 68-year-old woman survived spending 18 hours in the cold with her hand stuck under the hood of her pickup in a rural area near Molalla.

Firefighters said the woman was forced to stand the entire time, enduring cold overnight temperatures and light snow.

They said the woman was hooking up a charger to her truck's battery Wednesday afternoon when the hood slammed down on her hand at her home on South Elk Prairie Road in the Mt. Hood National Forest.

Molalla Fire District Lieutenant Mike Penunuri said the woman was unable to kneel, sit or even lean against the hood while stuck.

The woman was found by people in the area at around 11 a.m. Thursday. They called 911.

"We were out riding our horses today and we heard a lady screaming from across the canyon," the neighbor told a 911 dispatcher.

Firefighters said the woman was yelling for help for at least an hour.

The neighbors were able to free the woman and get her inside so she could warm up and wrap her hand.

"Just let her know help is on the way," the 911 dispatcher told the caller.

Paramedics then arrived and took the woman to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center by LifeFlight.

The woman was identified in the 911 call as Joan Zuber. Hospital workers said Zuber was in serious condition Friday morning.

Lt. Penunuri said she was dressed with many layers on and that likely saved her life.
